From 1 August 2013, learners aged 24+ wanting to start a level 3 learning journey with ICON TRAINING will be subject to new changes in government funding. Funding for our level 2 qualifications will still be available.

Your employees are able to apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning loan from August to start their higher apprenticeship with ICON TRAINING. The loan will help learners aged 24 or above to pay the fees of their level 3 ICON TRAINING programme, and is not subject to either a credit check or household income. Similar to a student loan for university students, the learner will not be required to begin paying back their loan until earning over £21,000 a year.

Teenagers wanting to work in the fitness industry will be able to be benefit from a unique pilot learning programme after ICON TRAINING was awarded a major Government contract.

ICON TRAINING is the only sport training provider in the UK to be given the go-ahead by the Education Funding Agency to provide its Ofsted Grade 1 training to 16- and 17-year-olds looking to work as a sports coach, fitness instructor or lifeguard. It is the first time the company, which delivers training programmes for the leisure, fitness, coaching, leadership and management, customer service, business administration and sales sectors at more than 200 assessment sites nationwide, has drawn up a programme specifically for foundation learners.

The free training course will be available first to students living in Portsmouth, Sandwell, Dudley, Dover, Margate, Guildford, Bexley and Manchester. To be eligible, learners must be aged 16 or 17 and for the subjects English and Mathematics they must not have achieved either a C or above at GCSE or a level 2 qualification.

The 36-week course will comprise four level 1 compulsory subjects – Certificate in Personal and Social Development; Functional Skills in English; Functional Skills in maths; and Certificate in Customer Service – and two level 2 qualifications: Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Young Adults in Sport and Active Leisure; and Award in Emergency First Aid at Work. Depending on their chosen career path, students will also choose one further qualification from: level 2 National Pool Lifeguard; level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction or from a choice of selected sports coaching qualifications, including football, tennis and swimming.

Mac Cleves, Managing Director at ICON TRAINING, said students enrolling on the unique Foundation course will spend one day in the classroom and another on placement in a relevant workplace to put their theory into practice. Upon successful completion of the course, they will then have the opportunity to progress on to a level 2 apprenticeship or gain a place at an FE college on a level 2 or above course.

“As one of the top training providers in the UK, we are delighted to be able to provide these high quality courses for foundation learners looking to work in the fitness and leisure industry,” said Mr Cleves. “These personalised programmes encourage young people, who may have previously disengaged with learning, to follow their aspirations and reach their full potential." They will not only attain useful and relevant qualifications, but will also gain essential industry work experience and qualifications. “Successful completion of these courses opens the door to further education and provides other avenues for these learners.”

Together, we hope the flagship apprentice scheme will help to address the shortage of aquatic personnel in the UK leisure industry. This new partnership with STA enables us to take our Ofsted grade 1 training into this area of the leisure industry, allowing young people opportunities to develop knowledge and skills to progress in this career path.
